VIDEO: What Are Verses, Choruses And Bridges?

Here is a clever little video by 12tone titled The Anatomy Of A Song in which he outlines his definitions of verses, choruses and bridges while at the same time sketching what he is saying on manuscript paper in fast motion.

What I particularly like this video is that it goes through the “why” of verses, choruses and bridges rather than just goes through the “how” of implementing these song elements.

This is backed up by the video synopsis on the 12tone YouTube page

What’s a verse? Ok, it’s a silly question, but… well, is it, though? As theorists, it’s important to understand not just the form of something, but also its function, and that goes for song structure too. Why do we use verses? What’s the point of a chorus? When should we use a bridge? What roles do they serve, and how do they help us make better art?

Do you agree with the definitions highlighted in this video? Let me know what you think.

Until next time, keep on writing,
